Grupo Comex is a Holding company committed to manufacturing, marketing and distributing paint, and water-proofing products. Its main focus is satisfying a wide variety of domestic and international market needs.
Even though Comex nowadays is an important industrial holding, 50 years ago it was only a small family run business. Born as Comercial Mexicana de Pinturas in a garage using only an old WWI mill, Comex in due time became the number one domestic paint market leader.
Water based paint production at the new facilities substituted oil based paints, common in those days, giving way to the Vinimex brand and increasing Comex’s domestic market leadership. Productos Industriales de Mexico (Pimex) was born due to an unfortunate 1959 plant’s fire and to the decision of breaking up the industrial and wood products manufacturing process from the rest of the paint products, therefore making it Comex’s first related company.
In the past, Comex’s spectacular growth fueled dissatisfaction amongst its competitors. Up to ten of its rivals united and threatened to not fulfill retail (tlapaleros) and wholesale customer’s purchase orders if they continued selling Comex products. Market share in those days was in control of the other brands, therefore, many dealers joined the boycott by returning Comex’s products and demanding payment reimbursement.
Comex’s founders, far from being daunted by the situation, established exclusive retail stores in order to sell their products, thus ending the boycott which threatened to destroy the company and giving it the thrust it badly needed.
Afterwards, the retailers network was born, making store owners out of store managers. This move definitely transformed the Mexican paint industry and positioned the company as the absolute market leader.
The 70’s decade, synonym of change and growth, set the company’s consolidation. Those were years of great activity and design, and more production and specialties sub-plants were added to the Tepexpan plant.
The Parque Reforma corporate offices, where Kroma was founded, opened at the end of the 80’s. Comex grew bigger and faster, and hundreds of network retailers consolidated the brand’s leadership, in Mexico and other countries.
Newer generations have been added Comex, helping it strengthen its pioneer spirit in a globalized world where strong competition and light speed changes pose challenges, thus becoming a main character – in a chaotic and uncertain environment – in the third milleninum. Comex Group is organized in four areas: Production, Marketing, Services and Research.

Comex’s concept strategies, Sensaciones and Sistema Tintometrico Color Center, face the imposed worldwide economy challenges.
Sensaciones de Comex is a state of the art concept based on color, texture, and new finishings that create spacious and harmonious atmospheres. Its futuristic vision creates an integrated idea where man is displayed and identified in his own spaces and atmospheres, motivating his creativity and personal style.
Comex’s finishings created for this new concept are: Denim (Mezclilla), Satin (Satín), Suede (Gamuza), Piamonte (Cristallo y Stucco), Toscano, Ferrara and Texturi. It too has created three Efectos Especiales concept manuals showing many techniques and finishing options.
Comex’s Sistema Tintometrico Color Center gives customers access to a large color scale. Colors were sold through a very basic color sampler before this system was deployed. This new technology matches and creates thousands of colors, and stores their formulas in a database for future reference.
All Comex stores offer more than one thousand different color schemes samples. Sistema Tintometrico Color Center formulas specify the amount of coloring needed to prepare a certain color. A spectrophotometer is used whenever the sample’s color is not in the “palette”. By using special software, a small camera plugged to a computer shows the sample’s color formula and matches it.
Sistema Tintometrico Color Center can match enamels, plasters, water based paints, multi-effect paints, monochrome finishings, water-proof products, wood varnishes and industrial coatings. The system carries Harmony software, capable of suggesting color combinations, an option similar to having a virtual interior decorator in each store.
With home, business environments and other spaces in mind, Comex has transformed its points of sale into real decoration and maintenance service centers. Comex stores carry everything needed to paint or coat. Qualified personnel recommend textures and finishings, and also offer customers practical tips and advice on how to prepare, repair and maintain different areas.
